After a recent spate of nano’s and micro’s, I though it was time to place a regular cache stocked with some nice goodies but you are going to have to work, I mean walk for them……
The Westville Trail follows the Mkubane stream which flows through the heart of residential Westville. Most of the trail wanders through beautiful riverine forest, though one section loops through grasslands. These riverine forests in Natal valleys have their own variety of trees, often very different from upper level forests.
The river water is kept cool by the shade of the forest canopy and in turn indigenous creepers and vines protect the trees from strong winds and heat, by acting as an insulating blanket. This dense canopy attracts a variety of birds which nest, shelter and forage for food amongst this tangle of creepers and vines.
The Mkubane stream is fairly fast flowing, tumbling over rocks and thus aerating itself. The faster flowing water washes silt out of the pools, leaving them clear and oxygenated, thus attracting aquatic life such as crabs and fish. Signs of mongoose and clawless otter have been seen. Slender mongoose have been sighted along the trail.
The self guided trail along the Mkubane has been created to highlight points of interest, and introduce the riverine forest to trail users. The trail can be started at the Westville trail archway next to the library, or from Jimmy Bellows sportsfield. The trail is marked at various points with arrows, and points of interest are demarcated with numbers.
