Flowing North through the Champlain Valley, Dead Creek, A navigable creek of about 10 miles between the Vergennes area and Addison empties into the Otter Creek near its mouth on Lake Champlain. The creek is at the heart of a 2,814-acre refuge and is best seen by canoe. There are great views of migratory birds passing through in spring and fall especially from the state road, locally called Goose Viewing Road, off Vermont Route 17 West. The Creek’s name is misleading. While no one knows why it is called Dead Creek, one possibility is that before water management began in an effort to control the water supply, the Creek would dry up during the summers and leave only small, scattered pools.
