The Illinois and Michigan Canal ran 96 miles from Chicago's
Bridgeport neighborhood on the Chicago River to LaSalle, Illinois,
on the Illinois River. It was finished in 1848 and allowed boat
transportation from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River and
the Gulf of Mexico. It ceased transportation operations in 1933.
As you are nearing the McKinley Woods Forest Preserve, you will
notice that the land becomes more spread out on either side of the
path. In fact, near this cache there is quite a large wooded area
leading to the river. Once you enter the wooded area, you will see
a large duck blind that appears to be only accessible by small
boat. It is quite a large blind, and can even be seen in satellite
photos of the area. I imagine there is some pretty good duck
hunting here in the fall/winter. Have fun and be safe!
