Geocache Description:

A small container on the right-of-way of the abandoned Portsmouth & Dover Railroad (Boston and Maine) Houses nearby - please no night caching.

The cache is only 273 feet from Fisher St.

Park on Fisher St. at N 43° 11.236 W 070° 52.778 and look for two tar ramps opposite each other. That was the old grade crossing. Up until a few years ago there were rails in the street, but they were removed when Fisher St. was improved. Go North into the right-of-way. Do not walk on the mowed part, stick to the newly cleared path when entering the woods. Upon entering the woods you will see rotting ties piled up on the side. - follow them a little ways to the cache. They are turning this old right-of-way into a walking/bike path.

Right about at the cache the Portsmouth bound trains would have been whistling for the Fisher St. grade crossing. Two longs, a short and a long. _ _ . _

That signal is still in use today - you hear it several times a day when the Downeaster and the freights blow for the grade crossings in Dover. It is the most common whistle signal heard. You also hear 2 shorts for startup in answer to the conductors signal. Other signals are obsolete, such as "set brakes" and "release brakes" which were used in the days of hand brakes. Radios are also used now, which has made other signals obsolete.

This small lock and lock container contains some small trading items - animals, dinosaurs, etc.

The right-of-way is easy walking, The old ties have been taken up now, too bad you couldn't see it when they were in place, but the walking is much easier now.

FTF gets a micro bison container.

Enjoy this stretch of abandoned ties, (now - 11-24-2009 they have been taken up.) tie plates and spikes. When this becomes a bike trail they will all be gone; letting people see these remnants is the main purpose of these 2 "right-of-way" caches (the other one is temporarily archived - hope to have it up and running again soon.) Some of the tie plates are dated in the 1920's.

Congratulations to 4lvs for the FTF, and dogcachers for the 2TF!!
