Die
Tonteldoosreeks
Hierdie reeks
Afrikanergeskiedenis wil deel d.m.v. geocaching.
Regdeur
lei.
Hierdie is die
vyfde skat in die Tonteldoos reeks van 18. Die skatte kan in enige
volgorde gesoek word.
Die volledige
beskrywing van die tonteldoos-tema kan hier
gelees
word.
Die Slag van
Bloedrivier – 16 Desember 1838
Baie
bevel van koning Dingane by Mgungundlovu vermoor. Tydens
Andries
oprig.
Teen
11:00 het die Zulumag begin terugval. Hierop het Andries Pretorius
dadelik ‘n berede mag uitgestuur. Baie Zulukrygers is gedood
terwyl hulle die rivier probeer oorsteek het. Daarom het die
Voortrekkers die rivier Bloedrivier genoem. Die agtervolging het
drie ure geduur. Die Zulumag is oorwin en 3 000 Zulukrygers het
omgekom. Slegs drie Voortrekkers, waaronder Pretorius self, is
gewond.
In

The Tonteldoos
(Tinderbox) Series
This series were
inspired by Afrikaans-speaking geocachers who wanted to share some
of the Afrikaner history through geocaching.
Throughout South Africa - our ‘Land of Milk and Honey’,
18 tinderboxes have been hidden. In every one you will find a clue
that you need to collect. During the Easter weekend of 2009, a
code-deciphering key based on these clues will lead you to the
coordinates of the 19th and final Great Cache.
This is the fifth cache in the 'Tonteldoos' series of 18. You may
attempt cache finds in any order.
A more comprehensive description of the theme for the series can be
found here
The Battle
of Blood River - 16 December 1838
Many Voortrekkers, having left the British governed Cape Colony to
establish an independent government, chose Natal as their
destination. Their leader at the time, Piet Retief, negotiated with
the Zulu King Dingane for land. During their last visit to
Mgungundlovu on 6 February 1838, Retief and his comrades were
killed on command of King Dingane. Hundreds of Voortrekkers and
servants were massacred at Bloukrans and Weenen during follow-up
attacks.
Andries Pretorius arrived in Natal in November 1838 and was elected
as the new leader. Pretorius immediately organised a punitive
commando consisting of approximately 64 wagons and 464 Voortrekkers
(all male) accompanied by the same number of servants and wagon
attendants. On December 9, 1838 the Voortrekkers made a Covenant
with God, that should He grant them victory over the overwhelming
Zulu force, they would commemorate that day as a Sabbath and erect
a church in His name. The Covenant was repeated every evening until
the evening of December 15.
The wagons were placed strategically on the banks of the Ncome
river. The Zulus attacked with between 12 000 and 15 000 warriors
on the morning of Sunday, 16 December. They launched attack after
attack but to no avail. By 11:00 the Zulus started to retreat.
Pretorius immediately sent a mounted force in pursuit. Many Zulu
warriors were killed in their attempt to cross the river, hence the
name Blood River<. The pursuit lasted3 hours and the Zulu force
was defeated. Three thousand (3 000) warriors were killed. Only
three Voortrekkers, including Pretorius were wounded.
The pursuing commando reached Dingane’s royal kraal,
Mgungundlovu on 20 December. It was burnt to the ground and
deserted. The remains of Retief and his men were found on a nearby
hill, KwaMatiwane. The treaty that Dingane and Retief had signed
was found in Retief’s shoulder bag. According to the treaty
Dingane had relinquished a certain piece of land in Natal to the
Voortrekkers.

watched by terrain workers whilst searching for the clues and
please replace the clues carefully so that others after you can
also read it. A pair of tweezers will come in handy to get the
clues out of the container and reading glasses will help if the
eyes are a bit weak!!
The
Cache
The cache contains, amongst other things, several old iron items
which I collected in my dad’s old forge on the farm. It
probably dates back to the Boer War and it will be great if it can
be exchanged for other old items. For the first-to-find there is
also something special together with a “Fish Eagle FTF
geocoin” which glows in the dark!
