Geocache Description:

Black Gold is now the nickname for oil but for hundreds of years it has stood for coal. While Montana has the largest coal reserves in the United States, Illinois is second. The United States has the second largest coal reserves in the world today. Springfield was once home to 20 coal mines but now has none. This cache is a tribute to the coal miners of the Springfield area. When first placed it contained: a coal railroad car; a coal delivery truck; a coal miner carved out of coal; pick and ax charm; coal miner helmet charm; coal shovel charm; coal miner charm; 12 coal company identity helmet stickers; 5 coal mining safety helmet stickers; 2 coal script tokens; a piece of coal; a log book and pencils; and a first to find token. In addition it contains a pyrite sun which are found in coal mines near Sparta, IL at the 300 foot level in a very narrow seam laying on top of the coal. Miners bring them out to preserve what would otherwise be destroyed. They date in age to 350 million years old.
