Geocache Description:

located on the eddyville sand prairie. just off highway 63. take the eddyville raceway exit.

A few years ago when the new four lane highway was being planned. it was discovered that a rare sand prairie existed near eddyville where the highway was planned to be built. much energy was spent to preserve this area< and keep the road from destroying the rare forms of life that live here. one of the last sand prairies of it's kind in the midwest. while most of the sand prairie was given to Wapello county ( over 200 acres) this 55 acre plot is managed by the Mahaska county conservation board and is part of the same eco system. some of the rare species you can find here are Prickly pear cactus, Pale green orchid, 6 lined race runner lizards, and ornate box turtles. this cache will lead you to the parking area for this preserve.
