A66 Scotchman's Stone

2nd of two adjacent caches on the south side of the A66

The co-ordinates take you on a country lane that loops south of the A66, rejoining the A66 after about 2 miles.

From the west turn right off the A66 at Cross Lanes signed: Brignall 2.

From the east turn off the A66 at Greta Bridge, signed: Barningham, Greta Bridge and Brignall. Cross the magnificent Greta Bridge and just passed the Morritt Arms Hotel, turn left to Brignall.

The car parking co-ordinate is beside the new St Mary's Church, Brignall, (1833) is also shared with cache "A66 Deserted Medieval Village" Both caches are beside the River Greta a short walk apart and can be done one after the other.
Scotchman's Stone is marked on the 1:25000 OS map. John Sell Cotman 1782-1842, now considered to be amongst the finest water-colourists, discovered the delights of the River Greta in 1805 whilst staying at the Morritt Arms Hotel, and painted many local scenes. The stone is so massive it has remained unchanged. See Cotman's Scotchman's Stonehere and Cotman's Greta Bridge here and about Cotman here

It is also mentioned by Charles Dickens in Dotheboys Hall. "From Greta Bridge, up the bed of the Greta, passing the Scotchman's Stone and the Robber's Cave, or by road, the traveller will arrive at Bowes."
Take the footpath beside St Mary's Church down towards the old St Mary's Church. Follow the green lane downhill as it zigzags towards the River Greta. At one of these turns you will see a large sycamore tree beside a small beck. Take a look at the beck which has been cobbled in days gone by.

You now go down the medieval green lane until you come to a 3 finger signpost. Now walk to the primary co-ordinates which is a semi-hidden style.

Cross the style into the wood. You will then come across a rustic shelter. Just to the right in the River Greta you will see two huge boulders, the larger one is Scotchman's Stone (see waypoint co-ordinates). If you look closely there are footings chiselled out which must have been for footings for a wooden bridge across the Greta. On the opposite bank is Eastwood Hall. I assume this path was for the locals to get to work on the local estate.

When the water level is low, you can get onto Scotchman's Stone but be careful it is extremely slippery. At the time of writing, there are some large trees that have been washed down the Greta and caught up on the stone.

Now walk back into the wood and find the footpath. Continue walking down the footpath until it becomes indistinct.

Continue on into the group of trees where you will find some of them marked with a small horizontal white flash.

All but 4 flashes are there to confuse. What you are looking for is a tree that you can stand and lean back on, which is the bottom of a 'V', where the flashes on 2 trees to your left align to from a single line, and similarly by turning your head to the right, you can find another 2 flashes that align.

When you have found that tree the cache is about 5 metres behind you.

See photo labelled 'example', this is what you are looking for (but they are not the actual trees you want)

Obviously if you are taller or shorter than me (6 feet) then you may have to make small allowances.

Finally, please hide your foot marks from the tree and cache so you don't give the game away for others that follow.

Thanks.
