Geocache Description:

Painted ammo box on summit.

This cache is on the summit of Selkirk Peak, it is not inside the summit cairn, but it is very close. To gain the summit via the direct approach along the ridge from the Idaho Lookout Parking Area will take some serious scrambling with some exposure and good route finding skills needed.

This cache was placed on 8/8/08 to honor a special wedding anniversary. Check out the photo, they honeymooned down below on Slocan Lake and you can usually find them there during the summer months.

There are a few ways to reach this cache.
The recommended or easiest would be to drive to the Idaho Lookout Parking Area and then follow the trail that starts out towards Selkirk Peak. The trail follows the ridgeline that connects Idaho Peak & Selkirk Peak. As you get closer to Selkirk and the terrain gets steeper, the trail gets much more difficult to follow. The direct ridgeline seems to be the best route; again it will involve some exposed scrambling on very steep terrain. Weather should be a concern, rain, high winds, or lightning would be very dangerous in this area due to its exposure. Check the posted photos for more information.

Another route would involve hiking the Wakefield Trail up from the Silverton side of the peak to the Idaho Lookout Parking Area. This would push this cache into a full day event most likely.

Driving instructions - - From HWY 6 exit towards Sandon, the distance to the Parking Area is 17 km / 10 mi. You will be on single lane logging roads & 4WD is recommended, but you will see many good 2WD’s making it easily to the parking area. Please be very careful, especially on the weekends in late July & Aug. The Idaho Peak Trail is a very popular wildflower & hiking spot in this area.
Please search out more info online on the Idaho Peak Lookout Trail for more information. Take more water than you think you will need, and have fun! If you have not done the Idaho Peak Lookout Trail and do not have much alpine climbing experience, please try that peak first. This would be rated about a 1.5 trail for difficulty, compared to a 4.5 to Selkirk Peak. Please sign the log at the trail head to Idaho Peak and note that you are headed to Selkirk Peak.

Estimated drive time 1/2 – 1hr. Estimated hiking/climbing time 3-4 hours. (Post if your times are different?)
