Part of our salmon series. A quick pull up and grab but take time to look around some.
Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) more commonly known as silver salmon or silvers are truly amazing! They have a range which extends east to west both sides of the Pacific and south to north from Monterey California to Alaska and the Bering sea. Juvenile coho's spend up to 2 years in their natal freshwater streams before migrating to salt water for a 1 to 2 year stint. Returning to their natal stream weighing at this point as much as over 30 pounds.
Naylor Creek flows out of Gibbs Lake to Chimacum creek and in late summer is often a mere trickle as in the image. The late fall and early winter rain storms bring the lake level back up and sometime usually after Thanksgiving the cohos return making it to the lake area to spawn. Some years the stream does not come up enough for them to get all the way to the lake area. From the area the cache is hidden in a wet year you can sit and watch the coho's go through their spawning ritual.
