Geocache Description:

This is a quick cache and dash This is a regular lock n lock type container hidden at one of the entrances to Lanrick Castle.

The great families and clans who were once proud owners of Lanrick Castle, situated between Doune and Callander, had many tales to tell.
No one quite knows when the first dwelling was built here, but it was certainly mentioned as being owned by Sir John Menteith, the betrayer of Wallace in the early 1300’s. Before that it had been part of the Celtic Earldom of Lennox and eventually passed down to Agnes a descendent of Sir John.
Through marriage Lanrick merged into the lands of the great Haldanes of Gleneagles where it remained for almost 300 years. Not long after the demise of the Jacobites it eventually came to be owned by the MacGregors, one of whom was to become Chieftain of all the clan, Sir John Murray MacGregor. It came to be known for a time as Castle Gregor, and within the policies the MacGregor Monument, consisting of a tree built in dressed stone capped by a Doric rotunda, can allegedly still be found, although there is no public access.
Controversially demolished in 2002, Lanrick Castle lay close to the River Teith within the walled policies. Built in the 1790s for the Chief of the MacGregor Clan, it fell into disrepair in the 1960's. Despite being a listed building, it was demolished in 2002 by the landowner, who said the building had been damaged by storms, and felt that it would be dangerous to leave the building standing. It used to be possible to catch a glimpse of Lanrick Castle from the A84, between Stirling and Callander. Half-hidden in a forest above the River Teith, the mansion's crenellated towers and bartisans evoked a Gothic reverie of mystery and romance. There are many entrances to the estate, some more ornate than others. Originally the main entrance was on the A84 Stirling to Callander Road, which led to an ornate suspension bridge, but after the Castle was demolished in 2002 this entrance was blocked off the and lodge house fell into ruins.
The cache is situated at an entrance on the opposite side of the river on the back road from Deanston to Callander. This led directly to the McGregor Monument, although the gates are now firmly locked and haven’t been opened for years. You do not need to enter the estate to retrieve the cache.
