Another musically connected cache- sorry we couldn't resist!
Under The Boardwalk was originally a 1964 hit for The Drifters.
It reached No 4 in the US chart but only No 45 in the UK. it has
been covered by many artists - The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones,
John Mellencamp, The Undertones, Bette Midler, The Tom Tom Club,
Billy Joe Royal, Bruce Willis and Lynne Anderson.
This boardwalk has nothing to do with the song though. It is
part of Westmuir Community Woodland.
Westmuir was one of the small villages that built up around the
Kirriemuir in the 1800s to house workers in the linen industry.
This area of woodland was also used by the cattle drovers as
somewhere to rest their cattle before taking them on the the
markets in Kirriemuir and Forfar.
The wheelchair and buggy friendly paths around the woodland have
been created with grants from various organisations including The
Scottish Executive, Angus Environmental Trust and Scottish National
Heritage. Steps have been taken to encourage a wide variety of
animal life into the habitat
There is an interpretation board at the start of the walk,
giving you more details of the area.
Although the paths are disabled friendly, a wheelchair user will
need assistance to retrieve the cache.
The area around the cache is very wet and boggy as soon as you
step off the path. If you feel your way, it is possible to retrieve
the cache whilst staying dry!
Cache is a 1 litre lock and lock box.
