Somewhere
in Orchard Rd., Singapore 3.08pm.
The
still of the quiet mid-afternoon was broken by quick, hurried
footsteps. The pace quickened and then suddenly the rhythm broke
into an accelerated run. She glanced back,
then scanned the surrounds. “Take a
chance”. She dashed
across into the exit staircase but alas someone was already there.
Someone already watching,
waiting. She
clutched her handbag tightly and lunged up the
stairs. She felt a
sharp jolt at the back of her head as he pulled her by her
hair.
“Give it
to me!” He drew her up
close.
“Never!”
she hissed, her right hand instinctively going into her
handbag. She gripped
her handbag tightly. He looked at the handbag and then struggled to
hold her in an arm
lock. “Is it a
secret worth dying for?” he whispered into her ear as he tightened
the grip and started to chortle her with the free
hand. She hissed back
“You will never know”.
She was
strong for a woman so small. “I must not
fail”. Her hand found
the appropriate weapon in her handbag and she drew out an ornate
jade dagger. The tip seemed blunt but the edges were sharp enough
to penetrate the elephant’s
hide. The movement of
the dagger was but a blur but he dodged it easily being trained in
the highest form of unarmed
combat. A fist came out
of nowhere as she felt a sharp sting and clutched at her
nose. An unfamiliar
pain shot through her temples. Her palm was bloodied as she saw the
sticky red fluid on her hand. Her head felt dizzy as her knees
started to buckle. Her
hand found the glass window for support transferring a crimson
image of her palm on the glass.
“NOW!”.
He charged at her and they struggled for a moment
before both of them lost balance and tumbled down the
stairs.
One flight, two,
three. In the
struggle, the handbag found freedom and the contents spilled
noisily down the
stairs.
They
came to a stop as she landed with the heavy set man on top, their
momentum stopped abruptly by the wall as his weight crushed her
chest. She felt
something in her chest, something cold
as a dreadful
realization coursed through her mind.
He stood up and saw the crimson spread quickly from the hilt of the
dagger over her blouse and soon it was wet with the red fluid with
a sick odour of the ominous
outcome.
