Rota da Cal
Placed in the area of São Vicente it’s a very nice and informative attraction which is worth to visit: The Lime Route. In Portuguese Rota da Cal”.
On a volcanic island, lime is very seldom and that’s why this place was very important in the past centuries. More Information you can get behind this webpage:
Madeira Rota da Cal
which is available in Portuguese and English. The job was very hard. The baskets filled with stones were up to 100 kg and had to be carried by feet from the quarry to the limekiln. The museum shows a short movie how lime was produced in the past. Spend this time and watch it. And a cool drink you can have at the bar at the museum.
The first ten finders of the cache can take a Photo CD with pictures of Madeira shot by myself. Pictures are only for private use. Otherwise you have to ask me for copy right.
Combine this route with a visit of the Encumeada Pass and the very interesting old north road. The very old parts of this road are “one way” only in the direction from São Vicente to Porto Moniz.
