Varden på Hankö Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,
Cervis Venator

Geocache Description:

Varden is Hankös highest peak and offers a splendid view of the mouth of the Oslo fjord. Hankö can be reached by ferry from Vikane. The house is private, but inhabited by very friendly natives. The cache is placed here in memory of its former caretaker Janina who left us all on a cold but sunny vinter day in 2013.

Varden is a fantastic big yellow house on the highest point of Hankö. The house is private as well as the land surrounding it, but by being discreet, behaving well and taking advantage of the allemansrätt ("everymans right") you can find the cache.

Varden is inhabited by incredibly friendly natives who love strangers, especially foreigners and even more so if they speak French - try your luck!
If they have a grumpy day just tell them the cache was placed here in honour of the familys oldest daughter on her birthday: 5:th of August 2008. (Unfortunately she is no longer with us.)

Varden was occupied by the Nazis during the war as well as the rest of Norway and was used as an observation post.

The cache used to be placed in one of the now blown-up bunkers the Germans left behind as huge scars in the granite bedrock. Now its in a more convenient hiding place.

(The friendly natives used to hold ceremonial fires in the old bunkers. Some say they burned refuse - but others claim its part of a norwegian cult. These days they have succumbed to the regulatory forces of the Fredrikstad kommune and are shipping their old radios and tyres to the state landfill instead.)

The island Hankö is the summerhome of the rich and famous in Norway and have been so for many years.

The former wood and fishing industry barons who built the splendid summerhouses on the island have left over to their offspring who make even more money today from oil, shipping and financial business.

The island has the discreet charm of the very special norwegian bourgeoisie that likes to wear old sweaters ("lusekofte") on top of very expensive lingerie. The island of course sports some royals as well. Late king Olav used to frequent the island during summer with his splendid yacht the "Norway" and today you can find princesses and royal clowns on the island.

When you have found the cache you can reward yourself with a dip in the fjord at Pölsesund - the rocks at the very - very end of the pathway going south along the shore of the little inlet below Varden.
When you jump in - dont forget to shout "Nå haaaaar vi det!"
Thats what the natives do!

In the cache we left:
2 hand made wooden boats
1 isolator
logbook and pen
