Cragg's Creek - the GOB! is the fourth cache in a series prefixed
with "Cragg's" in this area. All but one cache "Cragg's Island" can
be accessed via the track you are travelling on to collect this
cache.
Though contemporarily known as "Katarapko" the adjacent Creek and
Island were at a previous time known as "Cragg's" or "Cragie's"
Creek and Island after the first European residents to built a
permanent abode along its course; John and Margaret Cragie together
with there 5 children who build a limestone hut nearby in the early
1850's (see Cragg's Hut cache).
The GOB!, as the name suggests, is at the mouth of Cragg's Creek.
The junction of where Cragg's Creek re-joins the Murray River.
Enjoy the huge old River Red Gums, the enormous expance of water
and the myriad of bird life that is generally present. At this
point you have reached the end of a creek that begins a short
distance from the last cache (or first, depending on how you're
travelling!) in this series (Cragg's Island cache).
The cache is a small black screw top container containing a log
book, pencil, stash note and a few items for trade. The main track
to this cache is good gravel road up until where the Mallee Drive
track re-joins. Following this point the track to this cache
travels on river flats, sand blows etc and may be closed by rangers
if deemed not passible by vehicles due to rain or excessive sand
etc, in which case you will not score the cache unless you
undertake a long walk. Although accessible by 2WD (2WD was use when
planting the cache) a 4WD is recommended for this cache as parts of
the track are sandy and may cause low 2WD's to bottom out and
potentially get bogged. You will be quite a way from help so it
pays to play it safe if in any doubt.
The cache is also accessible year round via the creek or river
(boat, kayak etc) and a very short walk to GZ.
This cache is located in a National Park and normal National Park
rules apply. There are numerous excellent camping spots marked out
which cost a small fee to camp in. There are also toilets and fresh
water (rain dependent) provided by the Park along the main track.
No dogs are allowed in the park. To access this part of the
National Park, if driving, you will have to travel a short distance
on Aboriginal land, this is acceptable, common practice and no
permission nor fee is required if you are turning off into the
National Park.
