on a beautiful part of the Stiperstones, but at the less well known end above Snailbeach. There are a variety of ways to approach this cache, but my preferred option is via Crowsnest Dingle, which is a stiffish climb(Park at N52.36.475 W002.56.060) Not very suitable for disabled and cetainly not buggy friendly. Probably the easiest (and shortest) way is from Lordshill, using the footpaths that skirt Lordshill Farm. This is much more level, but there are a number of stiles.
At the end of the 19th century, when the mines were active and farming highly labour intensive, this part of the world was quite heavily populated. In an area now served by two village schools with under 100 pupils between them, there were once four schools and Stiperstones alone had over 200 children just before the Great War. Evidence of depopulation abounds in the remains of settlements, of which Blakemoorgate is one such hamlet. The most complete of the cottages here was occupied in the early 1960s. If you choose to walk up Crows Nest Dingle, keep an eye open for remains and ask yourself are they industrial, agricultural or domestic? You will walk past a farm, and on through woods, alongside (and over)a stream, and then through roughly cultivated land before climbing through Heather, Gorse and whinberries, to the top of the ridge. Views are superb. Dogs should be leashed. You will probably see buzzards and sky larks, possibly dippers. I hope you love it as much as I do. Cache contains the usual and is in a Sandwich box inside a cammo bag.
