The Works Progress Administration (WPA) that later became the
Work Projects Administration was Roosevelt's largest agency under
the New Deal of the 30s and 40s. The stonework at the entrance to
the park still stands as evidence of the WPA with a 1938 plaque
intact. The fireplace is gone.

The ovens and fireplace were the centerpoint of Veterans'
Memorial Park.
In 2007, the City of Kasson decided to tear down this structure
to make way for their "state-of-the-art" shelter. I wasn't aware
that a shelter could be state-of-the-art, but that was their
attempt to calm the residents of Kasson. This cache was placed to
let others know about what was once here and bring them to see
what's left of the front gate while it's still there.
The City's chief complaint about the fireplace was that it posed
a safety hazard, as people could climb up and fall off. I wonder if
they'll cut down the trees in the park too?
Come enjoy Veterans Memorial Park and find this cache. Remember
the fireplace and the cache it once held:
Squirrels on Fire. If you're up for a special challange,
Where's the Fireplace? still contains a bunch of it's swag, but
don't try to find the goodies unless you can do so without
leaving any trace of your presence. If anyone is able to
grab the old swag, I'd like to put the camera in another cache.
Fireplace Remembered contains:
- Cache Prize...er, Cash
- Pink Pet Eraser
- Princess Ring
- Volleyball Silver Medal
- Intel Keychain w/Screwdriver
- Gold Bead Necklace
- Superball
- Hamster
Remember: With all caches, 'trade even' or
'trade up' to keep it fun for everyone!
GOOD LUCK!
