For Pop Singer, Jim Croce, the touring life meant mostly one small college campus after another. Croce had just completed a concert at Northwestern here in Natchitoches & flying to Texas. The pilot & all passengers, 30 yr old Croce, 24 yr old Maury Muehleisen, a gifted musician Jim referred to as his "Ond Man Band" & George Stevens, the comic that was the warm up act were killed instantly. The plane didn't gain enough altitude to clear pecan trees at the end of the runway. Later investigation placed sole blame on pilot error. Pilot possibly suffered a heart attack after running almost 3 miles from the motel to the airport causing him to crash into the trees on a clear night.
News of the premature deaths sparked interest in Jim's 1st two albums, "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "Life & Times" & "I Got A Name" recorded only 1 week before his death. Sales soared & resulted in 3 gold records. Some of the songs most folks will recognize are Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, Operator, Time In A Bottle, which was written for his newborn son. Love & interest in his music still grows after 35 years.
