Geocache Description:

This cache is an ammo can, placed in the general area of the original town site.

The original town site of Ellsworth was selected and laid out by a Town Company in the spring of 1867, on the north bank of the Smoky Hill River. It grew rapidly, and the plat was recorded on the 8th day of May, 1867. The location seemed ideal, with the belief that Ellsworth was to become the western terminus of the Kansas Pacific railroad, not to mention that Fort Harker was just a few miles to the east with about 1500 soldiers and Government employees. It seemed to occur to no one that locating the town on such low ground right next to the river might not be such a good idea. On the 8th day of June, 1867, just a few short months after the town was established, the Smoky Hill flooded at this point, washing away many buildings and leaving about four feet of water in the remaining ones. At about the same time, and possibly related to the flood, a cholera epidemic broke out. After many died and many more fled, only about 40 residents remained. The Town Company realized its mistake and set about relocating the town to higher ground at its present site, which was recorded on July 18th of that year.
