Geocache Description:

35mm Film Canister, please BYOP.

The Mean Center of U.S. Population is determined by the U.S. Census Bureau after tabulating the results of each census.
The U.S. Census Bureau defines the Mean Center to be "The point at which an imaginary, flat, weightless and rigid map of the U.S. would balance perfectly if weights of identical value were placed on it so that each weight represented the location of one person on the date of the census."

The Population Center of the U.S. was in what is now the state West Virginia four times as it moved across the nation.

The first calculation was done in 1790 and listed the center as being near Chestertown, on the eastern shore of Md. By 1820 the center had moved out to an area near Wardensville. Ten years later the center was in Smoke Hole, then moving to the west of Buckhannon in 1840 and on to the Burning Springs area in 1850. The current census data, collected in 2000, has listed the Mean Center of U.S. Population to be in Edgar Springs, Missouri.

Across the street from this cache is the visitor center parking lot, where there are two Historical Markers about the town and the Population Center.
