So does anyone know how this spot got its name?
Take Balloon Tree Road off Highway 204 and follow your GPS. The road will be snow-free from around June 1st through November. Alternate transportation is required the rest of the year. This was at one time the site of a fire lookout, although not much can be found here. You will find the foundation and collapsed chimney for a house on the uphill side of the road, though. My source says there was a tower here in the 1930's. The USGS database confirms this; there is a benchmark listed here that says it was a 60' tower. The 180 degree view takes in Lookout Mtn to the northeast, the Wallowa area to the east, and the Eagle Cap Wilderness to the southeast. You're seeking a plastic lock-n-lock container.
