The year was 1854 and Auckland was the Capital of New Zealand,
before changing in 1865 when it was moved to Wellington.
The spring once formed a stream that flowed down into Official Bay,
aptly named as all the officials of the country lived in the area.
The best land in the area had been allocated for themselves!
Nowadays, the foreshore of Official Bay no longer exists, the
various stages of harbour reclamation having filled in the little
bay and covered the sandy beach.
The spring provided drinking water for the ships' crews down in the
bay for soldier above at Fort Britomart.
Prior to this, in 1845 Alexander Wilkie had set up a cordial
factory beside the spring and the water used to make aerated water,
ginger beer and sarsaparilla. By the 1890's the factory was
producing around 4 million bottles of soft drink a year.
In 1916, the company brought in water from the mineral spring at
Paeroa, flavoured it up and marketed in as 'Paeroa Water' the
forerunner to Lemon and Paeroa.
By 1960, the spring had been superseded as a source of water for
the city, and the soft drinks industry moved elsewhere.
Today as you will see it just tumbles into storm water outlet and
runs unwanted into Harbour.
The hole where it is visible is just big enough to get your cupped
hands in for a drink of the cool, clear water.
