This cache is a simple drive-by for those out on the road, the
reason for planting a cache here can be read toward the bottom of
the description.
Paruna and District Golf Club had it's roots on Section 41 Hundred
of Kekwick with a 3 hole course being established by a local bank
clerk in 1931. Such was the demand and persistence of the local
community the following year the District Council allocated the use
of the Southern Parklands for the development of a Golf Course for
what was termed 'Peppercorn' (insignificant) rental.
Ultimately the course expanded to 9 holes with a clubroom and
officially opened in the late 1930's. Full rounds of 18 holes were
play with the same course played twice. The Course record is a 70
which considering the putting surface is what is known as
'scrapes', fine gravel and dirt soaked in oil, and the fairways
nothing more than mown weeds amongst red mallee dirt it is a
remarkable feat.
The first Life Membership at the club was awarded to R.W.Edwards in
1975 who achieved the feat of being club champion on at least 9
occasions including in 5 consecutive years from 1966 to 1970. At
its peak the club boosted a membership in excess of 60 which
considering the population of the area is a respectable
achievement.
Recent times, for numerous reasons, have been hard on the region
and sadly the Golf club recently dis-banded. Having said that the
course is still open to the public (however no organised events are
staged on a weekly basis) so bring your clubs with you!!!
The reason for the cache is the uniqueness of
The 3rd @ Paruna.
The 3rd hole is a Par 5 447m for men and 393m for women, however
cutting across the fairway about 2/3 to the hole is the main
highway (B57) from Pinnaroo to Loxton. At GZ you will see the
to the East the pin for the 3rd hole, to the west is the tee off
area, your car may well be parked in the middle of the
fairway!!!!
Golf courses with holes on either sides of a highway are commonly
known but how many can boast that a main highway dissects one of
their fairways?
The cache is a small rectangular plastic container containing a log
book, pencil, stash note and some small items for trade. Beware
when signing the log you don't get whacked by a wayward tee shot or
a shot that has bounced off the main highway!!!
