This is one of 9 caches on the Great Victoria Desert Trail – possibly the roughest, most remote, geocache trail in the world.
Cache is 40 x 20 x 75mm - it only contains a small note pad and cache note (take your own writing implement).
These caches are sited along the Anne Beadell Highway from Coober Pedy in South Australia to Neales Junction in Western Australia. The Anne Beadell Highway itself extends from Laverton in Western Australia to Coober Pedy, about 1360 kms in length. It was build by Commonwealth surveyor, Len Beadell, during the early 1950's as part of the Woomera Rocket Range, and he named it after his wife Anne. It traverses very remote desert country, the longest stretch without water or fuel is about 750 km and is best travelled from May through to September.
The name highway is extremely misleading as the trip traverses bush tracks that are often very narrow and twisty. Much of the trip is over red sand, however you will experience road surfaces from fairly hard and packed to very soft. The track is badly corrugated for much of its length.
There are permits that you will have to obtain from a number of different organisations, so do your homework before you travel. There is plenty of advice and information available on the internet.
This is not a trip for those under prepared. It is dangerous isolated uninhabited desert, but an interesting trip nevertheless. Your vehicle must be a 4WD, in top running order. Preferably travel with other vehicles, with either HF radio or a sat phone for emergency communications.
