Geocache Description:

CARSHALTON METHODIST

Another contribution to this series, started by sadexploration

The first Carshalton Methodist church was originally built in North Street in 1861. This was replaced by a new church in Ruskin Road in the early 1900s, but during the 1920s the congregation grew so large that a new church was erected alongside and the original church was retained as the church hall.

Alongside the church hall you will find Carshalton Park which has many sweet chestnut trees planted in the age of Shakespeare, one of which has been recognised as one of London's twenty greatest trees by an expert panel of horticulturalists and civic leaders. Recognisable by it's great size and curious 'hobbit doors' the tree is over 400 years old and, despite numerous arson attempts, still going strong. The chestnut is now over 10m (32ft) in circumference and more than 20m (65ft) high, making it one of the largest in the UK.

This is a very simple multi, you can park by the church then round up the clues to give you the final cache location which is a few minutes walk away.

Number of foundation stones on the original church = A. In case any of the stones are covered up there are an equal number each side of the door,

Mrs Trumble who laid one of the stones was B of C (number of letters in each word)

Cache at: N51 21.(A-1)(B+1)A W00 09.C(B-1)A

If anybody would like to expand this series please do. We would just ask that you contact sadexploration first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names and to avoid duplication.

As you walk to the cache you will see some of the magnificent Sweet Chestnut trees that date from the time of King Henry VIII.
