This cache is hidden along a newly developed section of The
Mountain Division Trail, which follows the original Portland and
Ogdensburg Railway. It is an easy, pleasant walk.
The railway was purchased by Maine Central Railroad, renamed The
Mountain Division Line and later abandoned by Guilford
Transportation in 1994. In 1997 fifty miles of the line, from
Windham to the New Hampshire border in Fryeburg were purchased by
Maine DOT; thus preserving the row for recreational and future rail
use. In 2005, a loop trail was constructed on a new bike/pedestrian
bridge over the Presumpscott River connecting Windham and Gorham.
From the Gorham side, the loop trail passes through Shaw Park and
over a connector trail back to the MDT. The one-mile section from
Gambo Road and Route 202 was just constructed and paved in 2008.
The long range goal is to complete all sections of the trail and
connect Portland with the New Hampshire border and the new Visitors
Center in Fryeburg.
You will be looking for a small, well camouflaged lock n' lock
container. Please rehide well! Please use stealth, as this is a
popular section of trail for bicyclists and walkers. The trail head
and parking can be found at N 43° 45.005 W 070° 26.294
While a wheelchair may travel right near the cache, assistance
would be necessary for actual retrieval if wheelchair bound.
There are many other fine caches located in the area to check
out.
