Geocache Description:

Unfortunately the canisters we have used for this cache have been stolen and possibly used to hold blueberries. So this cache has been changed to a micro cache.

After temporarily disabling this cache, we have now replaced the stolen cache with a new cache. We moved it to a new location to prevent it from being "muggled".

Enjoy!

Located in southern Troy NH, Gap Mountain offers a spectacular view of Mt. Monadnock and the surrounding countryside for the price of a climb of less than an hour through lovely stands of pine and hardwood.

The cache is located in a lock n' lock box filled with lots of great trinkets. There is the "Climb Every Mountain" Travel Bug inside the cache with a gift for the FTF. Elevation is 1838 ft. Small hint: Once you reach the summit from the trail its hidden towards the right.

This is our first hide and we are excited to see where our Travel Bug journeys to. Remember its not the destination, its the journey that matters most.....

Directions from the North and West:

From Keene NH, take Route 12 south through the town of Troy. About 2 miles south of Troy, turn left on Gap Mountain Rd. Follow this road for 8 tenths of a mile, bearing right at the first fork. At .8 miles, take a sharp left (a sign points to Gap Mt). The parking area is about two tenths of a mile on the left. This lot is know as the South Parking Lot. Parking Lot coordinates are: N 42' 48.937
W 072' 09.031.

Ascent from the South Parking Lot:

From the South Parking Lot, proceed as follows: Immediately behind the sign board at the parking area a yellow blazed trail bears off to the left. (Do not attempt to use the paved road as this method of access to the Trail is now forbidden.) Follow the yellow blazed trail for 4 tenths of a mile to where the trail merges with the Metacomet Monadnock Trail (white blazes). Continue straight ahead on the M/M trail immediately crossing a swampy stream (use boards to cross muddy spot). The trail then climbs steadily through mixed forest, emerging into a overgrown field at .6 miles and then crossing a stone wall into a hay field. Bear left here and follow the wall (there is a black mailbox next to the stone wall where many people log their hike experience) back into the woods emerging on a woods road where a State of NH Bulletin Board is situated at .7 miles. Cross the woods road and follow the white blazes, climbing through mixed forest to emerge at an open field with nice views back to the west at 1.0 miles. Turn right at this area and climb steeply reaching a rocky ledge at 1.1 miles.

If your still in the mood for hiking, an unmarked trail leads off from the base of this ledge to the South Summit. Follow the marked trail (still white blazes) left steeply up the rocky ledge (there is a pathway around the ledge to the right of the ledge) then over a rocky path emerging on the Middle Summit at 1.3 miles. If you wish to visit the North Summit, follow the white blazes down into a swampy area and then back up to the summit (1.4 miles).

NOTE: On returning to the Parking Lot, remember to look for the yellow blazed trail to the Parking Lot on the left just after crossing the stream.

Happy Hunting!
