Geocache Description:

Northwest corner of Steuben County. Easy walk for most.

This cash contains historical information on this site, log book and pencil, and some interesting, collectable keepsakes.

To locate the cache go to the first waypoint at N 42 30.741 and W 077 39.695 and read the road sign. To find the next waypoint take the name of the road and with A=1, B=2 etc, fill in the missing blank in this coordinate with the second letter in the Road name N 42 _0.850. Then fill in the missing numbers in this coordinate with the number equal to the fifth letter in the road name W 077 38._ _ 3.

At this point look North Northwest. You are in Steuben County, which was once a rectangle. Part of this County was chopped out and added to Livingston County because there was more of an economic pull from this area to the north because of the development of the "new" village of Rochester on Lake Ontario. Farm goods could leave the village in the distance and be transported by water, which in the early history of this country was the best means of transportation, to Rochester. To find the next waypoint use the letters in the name of the village to the northwest of your location to fill in the blanks in the following coordinates, again using the code A=1, B=2, etc. N _ first letter in the town name 2 30._ _last letter in the town name TWICE _ first letter in the town name W077 37.8_ last letter in the town name PLUS 4_ first letter in the town name.

Arriving at this waypoint you will see an object with a date on it. Again using the town name to the northwest fill in the missing numbers in the MINUTES. N 42 30.554 W077 _second letter of the town name PLUS 2 _ third letter of the town name MINUS 7. Use the last number in the date on the object to fill in the following number to finally locate the cache. _22

When you find the cache it is in an ammunition box. Included in the cache are four sets of garbage bags and rubber gloves. If you are so inclined take one set out and pick up some of the trash left by the partiers in the area and remove the bag for your garbage on your trash collection day at home. There is simply no way to prevent the partying in the area, and perhaps we don’t want to. If they, whoever “they” are, can party here safely and away from disturbing others, maybe this is not all bad. I picked up a bag full when doing this cache and took it home with me. PLEASE let me know when you take out the NEXT TO THE LAST BAG AND SET OF GLOVES so that I can replace them with new sets.

To the best of my knowledge there is NO Poison Ivy in this area. Note nearby posted signs. If you find your GPS taking you on the posted land you are going in the wrong direction, go back to the object and refigure your coordinates. NOTE We have permission from the land owner to be at this site and I have informed him that we will attempt to help him by picking up the trash left here should there be any. His name is Stan Howard. Should you bump into him while caching just let him know who you are and what you are doing. He is a nice gentleman!

Oh, one more thing. There is a gift certificate in the cache for ice cream...however the ice cream stand is closed for the winter. I will be replacing this with a different gift certificate later this week, and if the ice cream one is still there I will exchange it and keep the ice cream one for next spring. Also note...with deer season starting, even though this one is pretty much in the open, it is still not a bad idea to wear orange or other bright colors while looking for the cache.

I spoke with the Wayland Town Historian the other day. (Wayland is the next town to the east and the town border is nearby.) She remembers as a teenager walking to the site and seeing old grave stones as this was a cemetary site that had been moved to Perkinsville when the church here was abandoned in the 19th century. The stones are either gone or fallen over and now hidden in the ground. Should you find one of them while looking for the cache she would very much like to hear of your find. Drop Rebel Doctor a note and I will forward it on to her. THANKS!!
