Hughes Ferry Traditional Cache
Cache Sleuth: Due to recent multiple mugglings of this cache, and being unable to find a more secure alternate hiding place nearby, I have decided to take it down. Thanks to all who have found it over the years while it was active and in place!

A traditional cache hidden near the former site of the historic Hughes Ferry crossing of Gauley River, just south of Summersville, West Virginia.
The cache is located not too far from the site of the first ferry in Nicholas County to cross the Gauley River. It was a vital transportation link for settlers and goods, joining Wilderness Road in Summersville to the James River & Kanawha Turnpike. At first owned by William McClung, and later by Edward Hughes, the ferry operated until 1903 when the county built a bridge across the river. The cache is hidden along a bypassed section of old U.S. Route 19 (County Highway 19/66), about .20 mile from the present location of U.S. 19 and the most recent incarnation of Hughes Bridge. After finding the cache, be sure to check out the Hughes Ferry historic marker which is just a short distance to the west of the hiding place along the same bypassed section of old highway.
The cache is in an 15 oz round Lock & Lock-type container. Initial contents are: an art sticker book, 2 glass "gems", an L.E.D. pointer pen, toy jeep, geocaching 2006 pin, carabiner clip, 5 wheat cents in holders, 2 pencil erasers, GCS lanyard, and a log book with pen.
