Kaunas Fortress (Lithuanian: Kauno tvirtove) is the remains of a fortress complex in Kaunas, Lithuania.
V FORT
The pentagonal shaped asymmetric fort, adapted to the surrounding environment, is oriented towards the south. Even though the fort is built in an extremely attractive location from the nature’s perspective, next to the sea of Kaunas, on the upper terrace of the Semena stream, the major part of the fort’s territory is densely overgrown with trees and bushes. The sprouts on buildings, ramparts and in the fosses, levels the specific relief of the fort, which doesn’t stand out from the environment, and merges with the slopes of the stream’s valley and the array of trees and bushes and is therefore practically insignificant to the landscape. It is difficult to determine the configuration of the fort even from the bird’s view. Despite that, the sprouts of the fort’s territory, along with the array of sprouts of the surrounding territories, from an aesthetic perspective, is a valuable and attractive visual accent. The fort’s territorial sprouts are especially significant where the tree rows (on the eastern and western sides) remain. All of the fort’s buildings, except the barracks complex, are completely hidden under a shield of trees and bushes. The barracks, with openings padded for transport vehicles, concrete plates left behind by the Soviet army, concrete-paved roads and platforms twist the historical face of the fortification. The landscape formed by its local surrounding, its decadent buildings and dense sprouts is extremely repulsive. The territorial landscape is formed by the buildings of the anti-aircraft missile base built during the soviet times in the fort’s territory.
V FORTAS
Penkiakampes formos asimetriškas prisitaikes prie aplinkos fortas orientuotas i pietus. Nors fortas pastatytas ypac patrauklioje gamtos požiuriu vietoje, greta Kauno mariu, Semenos upelio viršutineje terasoje, didesne forto teritorija tankiai apaugusi medžiais ir krumais. Želdiniai ant pastatu, pylimu, grioviuose, niveliuoja forto specifini reljefa, kuris aplinkoje neišsiskiria, susilieja su upelio slenio šlaitu ir medžiu bei krumu masyvu ir kraštovaizdžiui praktiškai nera reikšmingas. Net iš paukšcio skrydžio sunkiai suvokiama forto konfiguracija. Nepaisant to, forto teritorijos želdiniai kartu su aplinkiniu teritoriju želdiniu masyvais estetiniu požiuriu yra vertingas ir atraktyvus vizualinis akcentas. Forto teritorijos želdiniai ypac reikšmingi ten kur išlikusios topoliu eiles (rytineje ir vakarineje puseje). Forto pastatai išskyrus kareiviniu korpusa visiškai pasislepe po medžiu ir krumu šydu. Kareiviniu pastatas su išmuštomis angomis transporto mašinoms, sovietines kariuomenes paliktos betonines plokštes, betonu gristi keliai ir platformos iškreipia istorini tvirtoves objekto veida. Vietine jo aplinka, sunykusiu statiniu ir tankiu želdiniu formuojamas kraštovaizdis ypatingai atgrasus.Teritorijos kraštovaizdi formuoja forto teritorijoje sovietmeciu pastatyti priešlektuviniu raketu bazes pastatai.
