Geocache Description:

A wooded area close to Blackshots Leisure Centre.

The cache is placed in a wooded area which is a fragment of ancient woodland from the 17th century or before. This area is known as Hangman’s wood, and is used by dog walkers, walkers, cyclists and horse riders, so some stealth may be required at times. There are some ancient mineshafts in the woods (which are fenced off), these mineshafts are roughly 60ft deep and at the bottom there are a number of chambers running off of it. The mineshafts were used by the Danes to extract chalk, hence the name Daneholes, which the local garage and roundabout share the same name. Hangman's wood provides an important hibernation site for bats within the "daneholes", for this reason it is a site of special scientific interest since it contains the largest hibernation site for bats in Essex.

Parking for the cache can be found at N51 29.504 E000 21.013, it is a small turning at the very end of King Edward Drive. You can also park at Blackshots Leisure Centre N51 29.474 E000 20.442 which has a swimming pool, childrens park and a field which is used for sports and dogwalkers, it is just a short walk away from the cache. If using this option a fairly busy road must be crossed, but there is a pedestrian crossing and a pedestrian bridge to get you safely across.

Congratulations to mcwomble for being the FTF.
