THE NW
CACHERS' OCTOBER MONTHLY MEET
TUESDAY 14th October 2008, 7.00pm onwards
The Red
Lion
Moore
Runcorn, Cheshire, WA4 6UD
Since publishing the cache page I have realised that Moore might
not even be in Runcorn it may be Warrington. However I work a
stones throw from here and my work is definatley in Runcorn so
please bare with me!
Most people's image of Runcorn is chemical plants and chavs and
yes the place has plenty of both. However what it also has is quite
a lot of very pleasant countryside. Although I am a Bolton lad I my
first ever cache find was in Runcorn.
(Daresbury Firs). I had worked in this area for a few years
before I started caching but it was only when I started tupperware
hunting that I realised what a surprisingly nice place it is.
Its particularly nice around the Bridgwater Canal and Keckwick
Brook. The Red Lion is adjacent to the canal in the village of
Moore. It's child friendly and they have high chairs and baby
changing facilities.
Nearby you have Moore Nature reserve, an earthcache, two
trigpoints and a YOSM. The Manchester Ship canal also passes
through this area.
ALL WELCOME. PLEASE
LET ME KNOW ASAP - NUMBERS AND FOOD (YES/NO). THANKS!
Fascinating facts about Runcorn.
Runcorn is actually two towns. A very old town which was a Saxon
Fort (Aethelfleda which the railway bridge is named after) and a
much larger new town which was built in the 1960s.
Runcorn is well known for its Chemical plants. These are here
because the area was rich in coal and salt.
Famous people from this area include Lewis Carroll and Girls aloud
singer Nicola Roberts. Many people seem to regard Nicola as the
least attractive member of Girls Aloud but I disagree. She's my
favourite one!
A famous person from the Village of Moore itself is cricketer
George Duckworth. He played in the infamous
Bodyline ashes
tour of 1932-1933. Possibly the most contraversial test match
series ever. He actually lived in the farmhouse directly across the
road from the Red Lion. Thanks to geocacher DillonTheDog for
supplying me with this information!
Runcorn's shopping centre is called Halton Lea. However everyone in
the town knows it by its former name "Shopping City". It was opened
in 1972 and was the first ever American style shopping mall opened
in the UK. At the time it was considered revolutionary. Now its a
bit of a dump to be honest!
Many tv programs have been filmed in Runcorn. Of these as far as I
know only one of these has been set in Runcorn. Two pints of lager
and a packet of crisps.
The Captain of the Titanic Edward John Smith bought a retirement
house in Runcorn. Unforunately he never got to visit it let alone
live in it.
The icon of Runcorn is the 'Runcorn Bridge' although its real
name is the Silver Jubilee Bridge. I travel over it several times a
week and it really struggles to cope with the traffic. Soon it may
get a helping hand if the proposed
Mersey
Gateway goes ahead.
