Geocache Description:

easy walking - last bit in trees

Welcome to the Hermitage - Part of the Big Tree Country
Managed by the National Trust for Scotland

Entrance is free to the Hermitage.
Non National Trust Members will have to pay a small car parking fee.

To appreciate this walk make your way to Ossian Hall by using the road on the right hand side of the bridge. (Away from the river) you can return via the path next to the river to make it a pleasant round trip.
While originally laid out nearly a century earlier, imagine arriving as a Victorian visitor just after 1864 by horse and carriage for an afternoon in the company of the Duke and his other guests.
As the Hermitage was build to shock and amaze visitors the new bridge would have been your first view of what was seen as an extension of the Dukes garden for Dunkeld House.

Now the history part:-
It has been said that the Duke of Atholl refused the railways permission to cross his lands which is why the line stopped at Birnam in 7 April 1856. The building of the railway was restarted by the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway in February 1864 all the way to Forres after the Duke and the Railway Company came to some sort of an agreement.
It would seem that the Duke got the best deal as he managed to get the Railway Company to build this impressive entrance that looks like a castle wall.
Also if you look at the arch over the river you can see his coat of arms.
Instead of destroying this designed landscape, the railway has in some way added to it with a “hidden” folly for visitors to pass under and sometimes not notice.

Please follow the The Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
There is no need to climb any fences or walls to retrieve this or any cache at the Hermitage.

Please take your own pen or pencil to log your visit.
