Geocache Description:

This is the third in a series of animal-themed caches. It is located along Bromley Lane, a public footpath running through Debden Meads, an area of rough grass and woodland near the village of Newport in north Essex. The steep wooded slope where the cache is hidden is a deposit of glacial sand from the last ice age.

Hi, guys!

My name’s Marcus (aka Marcus Barkus) and I’m a 5-year-old Collie x German Shepherd. Debden Meads is one of my favourite walks, so when Miranda was planning her latest cache, I said we must definitely hide it along here. It’s a great place, with lots of rabbits and squirrels to chase! There’s no livestock apart from some sheep at the far end near Brick House Farm, so I can be off the lead most of the time. We usually meet other dogs out exercising their people, and you’ve got Debden Water and the River Cam to splash around in. The paths are often nice and muddy, too!

The best place to park is in Water Lane, just beyond the railway bridge, where there’s a doggie-doo bin which sometimes comes in handy. The closest road access is from the Debden Road near Ringers Farm, but parking’s dodgy along there if you’re coming by car.

The cache is a clip-top plastic container.

Some of you two-legged folk might find the final approach to my hiding-place a bit steep. You should have seen Miranda, clinging on to tree branches and tripping over tufts of grass! I raced up and down the slope several times, just to show her how easy it was.

As well as a Log Book & Doggie Pen, we’ve put some really top goodies in this one:

Key-ring
Bookmark
Self-inking photo stamp
Model Labrador puppy (aah!)
‘The Dog’ Fanbuk
Fun scarf that fits on your collar for special occasions

I wanted to put some biscuits in, or a good juicy bone, but Miranda said the biscuits would go soggy and the bone would make everything smelly. I didn’t think that was a problem, but she’s the boss. We’re hoping that if you go searching for this cache, you’ll try to bring something suitably canine to swap.

Woof!!

PS I don’t know why you’re all so keen on these GPS thingies – they look terribly complicated. It's much easier to use your noses to find interesting things, like I do.

PPS If you have time, walk on a bit further and look at the wonderful old hollow oak tree on the bank of the stream, with the large burr on its bole. A little owl sometimes nests here.
