Geocache Description:

I invite you all to do the charleston dance on your way around my trail in Charlton Forest.

The nearby village of Cocking is a short drive north of the car park. (According to my OS map there is a PUB there !!!) In the 2001 census Cocking had 190 households with a total population of 459.

PARKING

Parking at cockhill cark park at N50 56.558 W000 45.340. Cross over the road to start the path.

Beware, if driving here the entrance is concealed and comes up suddenly !

I noticed a couple of bus stops nearby.

THE TRAIL

This is my 4th caching trail, and is a circular walk of about 7 miles. The entry to the trail is up hill and is part of the south downs way.
**UPDATE 14/9 I think the trail is actually 10 miles - GPS must have missed a bit !

A note on navigation - This trail is through forest which has many paths and firebreaks, so you may deviate slightly from the path I took to the caches. I used an OS map and stuck to most of the larger footpaths, so I suggest you have a map of some kind with you. The GPS points should mean you are on the same trail as me.

The paths in general seemed wide and well maintained, however some had nettles and some were slippery due to the chalk surface. I didn't have to cross any styles on my walk, so I guess dogs and cycles would be ok......!

At some points on the trail you can hear a rumbling noise. This is the singleton oil well. The cache trail to this is fairly close, so you could do that trail as well if you wanted to expand the walk.

BONUS CLUES

micro caches (35mm film containers) from numbers 1-12 contain bonus clues. Collect all the clues and use the formulae to find the bonus cache :-

N=50AB.CDE
W=000FG.HIJ

NOTE the tupperware caches (3,7), and numbers 0.5 and 13 do not contain clues. Please don't skip these else you will miss the trail !

Tupperware containers contain FTF certs :)

THINGS TO NOTE ON YOUR WAY AROUND

tap (not sure if drinking water). On your right near the farm buildings at the start of the trail. It has a plaque on the side in memory of someone dear.

deer - I scared a couple in the forest. (do they ever get stung by nettles ?!)

a large bird box. About 20 metres away from cache 2 there is a really tall tree. Near the top is a large bird box.

Mint ? Around cache 2 and a couple of other places further on was a strong smell of mint (the plant)

Old building. On the way to cache 5 you pass an old building. It is brick built, inlaid with wood which makes it look old fashioned. But now it has a corrugated iron roof. I feel that someone went to a lot of trouble to build it but it's in the middle of nowhere...!

At cache 12 you will be walking on a well used roadway (stone faced not tarmac). You need to use a cut through on your right at N50 56.437 W000 42.741 to take you onto the south downs way.

After cache 13 look to your right. You will see a few things.....

- tumuli, which are marked on my OS map. I think I saw one, they are large bumps in the ground which are raised over graves. Interesting to think what people were doing around here hundreds of years ago.

- A large hide on your right, the type you climb up a ladder to. Not sure what this is for spotting.
