Geocache Description:

The parliamentary Bill to construct Cant Clough reservoir was passed in 1883. Work was begun in 1885, but the whole undertaking was haunted by misfortune. The workmen, housed in wooden huts on the site and far from any town or large village, suffered considerably during the inclement weather & often grew discontented. Quarrels broke out between the engineers and the contractors either because plans were constantly changed or work proceeded too slowly.

The greatest dismay arose when it was known that the puddle trench would have to be taken to a far greater depth than the 85ft as was first thought necessary. Actually this "deepest puddle trench in the world" varied from 130 to 190 ft in depth and cost nearly 60 thousand pounds. Contractors had agreed to complete the work in 3 years but it was under construction for nearly eight years 1885-92 while the cost rose from the original estimate of 60 thousand pounds to a final one hundred and fifty thousand pounds.

Cant clough and its surroundings contain diverse plant life and nationally important numbers of moorland birds including golden plover, twite, curlew, dunlin and short eared owls can all be found in the area.

The Twite is a red-listed bird species of conservation concern because of a widespread long-term contraction of its breeding range and a decline in numbers. The South Pennines remain the English stronghold of breeding Twite but conform to this worrying picture. A special winter feeding station is set up for Twite at the reservoir.

The cache is a small (approx 1L capacity) click lock container. Initial contents include the usual log book, pencil and sharpener plus swaps. There is also a FTF prize of an unregistered Garmin Discover Hidden Britain ‘Stonehenge’ geocoin. Congratulations to sham68 on getting the FTF.

The goal of the Garmin Geocoin Challenge is to inspire people to get out and about and discover the UK's landscape's natural treasures through Geocaching. I would simply request that the finder follows the rules on the website (visit link) activate the coin and place it in a geocache within one week of activation.
