Geocache Description:

This is part of our River Valley Historical Tour

The River Valley Historical Tour
This is one of the River Valley Historical Tour caches. They are an assortment of caches designed to share the history of this area. Please take the time to appreciate this area for what it once was and what it can be again- a vibrant, thriving place where people lived, did business and raised their families. From the original people who fished and lived along the banks of the Penacook Falls (be sure to visit them while you are in the area) to the first settler, Jonathan Keyes in 1777 and the major changes brought by the arrival of Hugh Chisholm and his vision of a paper company in 1882, it has been a long and interesting journey for the Valley area. There is lots to see and do so come, make a day of it. Picnic with Paul Bunyan and his friends, swim at the local swimming holes or get some exercise on the hiking trails.

The caches are a wide variety of shapes, sizes and locations. We hope you have as much fun locating them as we did developing this project.

One thing: Please always think about what you write in your logs!! Spoilers (too much info, specific comments) can ruin it for the next cachers. Let’s keep it fun for all from the FTF to the latest seeker! Thank you

Scotty’s Ski Jump
The history of skiing in the River Valley area is a long and prestigious one. It has had an active and storied history that includes hosting the Olympic Tryouts in 1951. In 1952 the U.S. Olympic cross country and Nordic Classical skiers trained in Rumford. Wendall (Chummy) Broomhall and Bob Pidacks of Rumford made the U.S. Olympic Team and competed in Oslo, Norway. The World Cross Country Championships were in Rumford in 1958 because of Lake Placid’s lack of snow. The annual winter Carnival was a tradition that lasted 50 years. Olympic competitors from the area have been Chummy Broomhall, Jack Lufkin, Robert Pidacks, Frank Lutick, Jr. and Jim Miller.

If you look you can easily see Scotty’s Hill, still a popular sledding hill. All activities were moved to Scotty’s Mountain from the old area on Spruce St. in the mid 1940s. The Winter Carnivals, jumping were held here until 1958. At that time they moved to what is still Black Mountain Ski Area. Remnants of the old jumps can still be found on Scotty’s Hill.

Access is via the Pump House Rd. You do not have to cross MVHS or the private yards to get to the cache site.

Congrats to Gob-ler for the FTF
