It is located between the streets which were
originally named "Irish" and "German", for the immigrants who
settled in this area around the turn of the nineteenth century.
Irish Street was renamed to Main during the Civil War era. During
WWI German Street was changed to reflect the mood of the war
efforts. The current street name reflects this.
The coordinates will
take you to the parking area off of the "old German Street". To
locate the cache, walk to the utility pole along old German Street
and watch for a sign for a textile related museum. From here,
follow a compass bearing of 118 degrees (magnetic) for about 260
feet. The cache is in a 10 inches long plastic tube. The original
cache contents reflect the WWII era and include several coins
(including a 1942 silver dollar and some "V nickels" and zinc
pennies), a Garrison cap, seeds and instructions for a "Victory
Garden" and several other items.
Be aware of the presence of muggles,
especially on Tuesday and Saturday mornings from April until mid
November, when the Downtown Farmers Market is set up at the newly
constructed "Turner Pavillion". Friday nights in the summer will
likely see the summer concert series in the pavilion as
well.
As a side note,
Harrisonburg's only octagon house is located several hundred feet
beyond the museum sign, on the opposite side of the street. I grew
up in the 'burg and drove past it for many years without noticing
it until someone pointed it out. There are also some beautiful old
home to the east, in the "Oldtown" section of
Harrisonburg.
Please remember to "trade even or trade up"
and that the trackables (travel bugs and geocoins) are not
considered exchange items. They all have owners who have set
specific goals for them, so if you can help one on it's way, feel
free to do so without leaving something in it's place. Just be sure
to log it on the trackable page. Please note in the cache log what
you take and/or leave. Thank you.
