Geocache Description:

Cache located on the grounds of the lovely and historic Georgetown Cemetery. Please be respectful when hunting for this and other cemetery caches-- there is no reason to disturb graves or markers searching for it.

Georgetown Cemetery was incorporated in 1850 by citizens of the community who saw the need for a new cemetery. Over the next decade, money was raised and a 300 acre plot of land was purchased for $200 an acre. The first lot was sold to a man by the name of Harvey C. Graves (quite fitting, isn't it?).

The cemetery is run by a board of trustees, and continues to be used for burials. A number of locally famous people are buried there, including Gov. James F. Robinson, Gov. Joseph Desha, Confederate Gov. George Johnson (who was killed at Shiloh), World Chess Champion Jackson Showalter, landscape artist Will Hunleigh, world famous equine artist Edward Troye, Countess Elizabeth Magoffin Garnett and her husband, and veterans of at least 9 wars.

(based on information found at (visit link)

The cache is NOT hidden in/on/under/ or very close to any grave stones. Please do not disturb them looking for the cache. It is possible to access this cache without walking across any graves, for those who are bothered by that idea. The container is large enough to hold a number of smallish trade items-- it is starting with about a half dozen trade items plus a log and pen. Please place the cache back where you found it and check to make sure it is not highly visible to passersby.

I cannot find mention of cemetery hours anywhere. It seems to be open from dawn to dusk. Please refrain from searching for this one in the dark-- there are many fragile and old grave markers in the area that could be damaged by people stumbling around the cemetery at night.
