Die Gemeinde Mücke liegt im Herzen Hessens, im Ortsteil Flensungen ist der physikalische Mittelpunkt Hessens mit Markierungsstein.
Eine frühere selbständige Gemeinde Mücke hat es nicht gegeben. Wo kommt der Name Mücke eigentlich her? Warum nennt sich die Gemeinde ausgerechnet Mücke? Hat der Name etwas mit dem kleinen Insekt zu tun?
Der Name Mücke ist sehr alt, er kommt aus dem Keltischen. In dem Namen Mücke ist das keltische Stammwort "much" oder auch "mack" enthalten, was feucht und sumpfig bedeutet.
Urkundlich erwähnt wird der Name "Mücke" erstmals als Flurname "Im Mückengarten" im Jahre 1482 in einer Steuerliste der Pfarrei Merlau. "Auf der Mücke" (im Dialekt: "of der Mecke") ist sprachlich ein lokativer Dativ, der aussagt, dass sich der Name Mücke nicht auf ein einzelnes Grundstück oder Dorf bezieht, sondern auf ein ganzes Gebiet.
Dieser Gebietsname wurde 1971 zum Namen der heutigen Gemeinde Mücke.
Umgangssprachlich unter den Einwohnern war früher und ist auch heute noch „die Mecke“ das Gebiet um drei - mehr oder weniger - öffentliche Gebäude. Dort hin wird uns das Rätsel führen.
