This cemetery contains a number of interesting 'stump' grave
markers, as pictured. The cut tree in some cases symbolizes life
cut short, perhaps too short; it may also symbolize the head of the
family.
The posted coordinates will take you to one of these 'stump
stones.' As you face that stone (looking west), in a straight line
you will see a double-stump stone. Behind that, you will find
another. And behind that one, in line with the rest, you will find
a real stump that contains the cache you seek.
There are many rural cemeteries in Wisconsin. Geocaching is a great
way to get out and see some of these remote places, discover some
interesting and unique markers, and to help ensure that those that
have gone before us are not forgotten. With cemetery caches, the
cache container is not hidden on or connected in any way to any
grave site or marker. Occasionally, some information from a marker
may be used to obtain final cache coordinates. Please be respectful
of the cemetery and anyone visiting it.
About the WSQ-SCC Series WSQ stands for "Wisconsin Spirit
Quest, which is used by many Wisconsin cemetery cache owners. SCC
stands for Shawano County Cemeteries, and the number relates to a
position on a master cemetery map. Next is the township name, then
the name of the cemetery.
As we travelled around Shawano County while Geocaching, we would
occasionally come across “lonely and forgotten” cemeteries. These
are places that were once affiliated with a church that has long
since dissolved, formerly private cemeteries that have fallen to
community ownership, and other places that time seems to be passing
by.
As we looked into these places, we discovered that in fact there
are at least 115 cemeteries in Shawano County, and 99 of them are
publicly accessible and/or publicly owned. It is our intention to
bring new visitors to as many of these places as possible and
remember those who have gone before us. You just might find a
long-lost relative or two.
Therefore, these caches are designed to be easy to find, generally
consist of a container and log only, and focus on out-of-the-way,
rural cemeteries. Also, any multi-stage caches are designed to
bring you to special features of a particular cemetery.
