This is the fourteenth in a series of caches called “Not Drowning, Caching”, which explores Phillip Island; each cache contains a letter and number clue, which you will need to use to find the final in the series - please write down the clue then leave it in the cache!
These spots are major tourist areas, so the difficulty might increase with muggle infestation.
The wreck is only accessible at low tide.
Kitty Miller Bay is named after the daughter of a Phillip Island settler, although it’s probably better known as the final resting place of the Speke. Due to faulty navigation, Speke drifted broadside on to a reef on the eastern side of Kitty Miller Bay in 1906. Wreckage from the ship, including part of the bow still lies high on the rocks, and more debris lies scattered along the edge of the reef in shallow water.
On your way back from the wreck, keep a look out for a good skimming stone then use it on the bay and see if you can get the most bounces – my score was only 3, but the waves made it tricky that day…
The cache is located at:
S 38 30.abc
E 145 10.def
Where:
a = the number of triangular sails (including the one which hasn’t fully unfurled)
b = the beach number minus twice the number of boats in the background
c = the number of cylindrical holes on the wreck
d = Speke’s masts
e = the number of square sails (including the one which hasn’t fully unfurled), all divided by 2
f = the number of W shaped bollards on the wreck, minus the month when the ship wrecked
The bell from the Speke can be seen outside the Uniting Church in Cowes, where it’s still rung every week before the Sunday service.
This really is a multi, you need to visit the site to get the correct co-ordinates! Internet research will be interesting, but might not give the required answers.
