Potomac Lodge #100 was chartered in 1855 and the temple cornerstone laid in 1911. The impressive structure was designed by prominent local architect Wright Butler, reknowned for designing the Allegany County Courthouse (behind the temple). Also residing on the hill, the Emmanuel Episcopal Church was constructed in 1851. It served as a stop on the underground railroad and contains priceless original Tiffany stained glass windows.
