Geocache Description:

A truly amazing sight, a disused viaduct straddling the valley where the railway used to run towards Lyme Regis.
Parking for one car in the gateway beneath the arch.

A decent sized container, with camo paint scheme - please replace carefully and avoid creating a cachers trail.

Please sing "Underneath the Arches ..." to appreciate the echo before signing the log.

This 600ft long viaduct was opened in 1903 to carry steam trains on the branch line from Axminster to Lyme Regis. It was the first viaduct in the UK to be constructed in concrete, but the builders encountered subsidence and had to fill-in and reinforce the arch on the left.

Sadly the line was closed in 1965 and this is all that remains except for the original Lyme Regis Station, which was rescued and now used as a buffet at Aylesford station in Hampshire.

and for those too young to remember :

"Underneath the arches
We dream our dreams away
Underneath the arches
On cobblestones we lay

Every night you'll find us
Tired out and worn
Happy when the daylight comes creeping
Heralding the dawn

Sleeping when it's raining
And sleeping when it's fine
Trains travelling
By above

Pavement is our pillow
No matter where we stray
Underneath the arches
We dream our dreams away"
