Geocache Description:

Placed in conjunction with the Carlisle Park and Recs Department.

The History of Thornwald Park
The park was originally owned by the Sadler family who built Thornwald Mansion in 1910. The area had about 1300 trees and was described as "thickly wooded". Close to $1000 was spent (equivalent to $17,000 today) to preserve the trees from damage during construction. These trees were planted in 1902 which means the majority of the forest is over a hundred years old.

Located off Walnut Bottom Road in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, USA, Thornwald Park lies approximately 2 kilometers away from the Dickinson College campus. It covers 32 acres and includes a small forest with a well-marked Nature Trail used for hiking and biking, and a jogging trail that extends for three-fourths of a mile. Thornwald Park also contains lawns, gardens, and a small amphitheater known as The Carrol J. Warrell Theatre of the Arts, all of which are used for recreational purposes by Carlisle residents. The Park is bordered by high-density residential developments, sports fields, and a home for the elderly.

Thornwald Park presents 32 acres of jogging, hiking, biking, and picnicking in a lovely natural landscape. At its heart lies the eerily beautiful Thornwald Mansion, built in 1910. The park lies in the heart of town, off Walnut Bottom Road, near Dickinson College.
