The Harbor Springs Railway was a narrow gauge railway of 30 in
gauge built from Harbor Springs, Michigan on Little Traverse Bay on
Lake Michigan. It was nicknamed the Hemlock Central because of the
great numbers of hemlock trees growing in the area. The railway was
chartered by Ephraim Shay, the inventor of the Shay locomotive.
Here Shay's well-known Hemlock Central railroad ran north out of
the town. Although his Railway was primarily constructed for
logging, in the summer, vacationers were hauled for 25 cents a
trip.
It originally operated a route of seven miles (11 km) to Stutsman
and Race Mill; it was extended a further mile in 1904 to Carter's
Mill. Small temporary branches were also constructed as well as the
moving of the right of way when logging operations moved, as was
typical for a logging railroad. I am not entirely positive of the
origins of the name "Bull Moose Hill." Speculation is that Bull
Moose was a name of one of the engines used in winter time with
"studded or spiked" tires to climb this hill. There is a nice trail
located at the bottom of the hill with parking.
