When: Wednesday October 29th 2008, from 6.00pm 'til
11.00pm
Where: The Colney Fox, 1 Barnet Road, London Colney, St.
Albans, AL2 1BL. It's a large but nice country Pub in London
Colney, near St. Albans. They serve good food, reasonably priced
and have a selection of real ales - Adnams, Fullers & Charles
Wells. They publish full details of their menu on their website,
but unfortunately under the Groundspeak Guidelines we are not
allowed to provide a link to it. It is just a short distance from
the M25 and close to the M1 and A1(M) junctions.
Why: Ask Alibags, she made me do it! ;)
Who: Cachers from Bucks, Beds & Herts (& London
... & Lancashire ... & Kent ... & Germany!)
What: This is the ninth of an ongoing series of
mid-monthly-ish, mid-week-ish regular events at various locations
handy for natives of the three counties to talk caching, plan
expeditions and decide who's organising the next one. There's a few
caches in the area and we will be having a
"Poker Run" ???, with prizes for
the winners! There will also be the opportunity to be FTF on 7 new
caches for ALL those who
attend.

The original Poker Run was around a circular route with total
distance of approximately 1.6 miles (2.6 kms) of relatively easy
walking, though pushchairs may find it a little difficult in
places. There are 7 caches in the series and, without rushing, it
should take you less than an hour and a half. All caches are within
10 feet of a public path or an open area – so no need to bushwhack!
Some of the caches are close to water, so please take care,
especially if there are children with you.
What Is A Poker Run?
Everyone that attended the event got ONE and ONLY ONE
entry in the poker run (maximum of 100 total entries). There were 7
new caches and details of the caches were released at the event at
6.30 pm. In each cache were sealed envelopes, each containing a
playing card. When a cacher found a poker run cache they took
ONLY ONE envelope. All the SEALED envelopes were
handed in by 9:30pm to the Poker Run adjudicator. The envelopes
were then opened and the best poker hands determined. Once the
winning hands were identified, prizes were awarded. The more caches
that were found, the more cards were collected and the better the
chances were for a good hand. Participant had to hand in at least 5
envelopes to make a poker hand and stand a chance of winning a
prize. They all had to get the envelope from each cache themselves
- no having someone else grab envelopes for them from caches they
did not visit.
First To Finds –
FTF’s!
The 7 new caches all “went live” on the day after the event
and now you can log them as individual cache finds. You will be
able to log them as FIRST TO FINDS if, and ONLY IF,
you meet the following criteria :-
· You actually find the cache on the day of the event and record
your caching name in the cache logbook (they will be checked!)
· When you write your log on the cache webpage you start your log
with the following phrase –
“First To Find - Your Caching Name as part of the BBH9 Poker
Run Caching Team”
Congratulations to Simply Paul
for winning the Poker Run with a hand of JJ555 and to Alibags for
the lowest hand of Ace high!
