Geocache Description:

Rural Carlock

A multi-cache that takes you to two rural cemeteries. Abraham Lincoln traveled the 8th circuit along this route from 1847-1859. While making these trips he almost never stayed in a Bloomington hotel. He was however, often an overnight guest of Abraham Carlock, "the old Democrat".
Carlock owned 1000 acres of farm land that was partly in McLean County and partly in the newly formed Woodford County. His political views were in sharp contrast to his neighbor and strongly Republican, John Benson, Sr. When Woodford County was carved out of McLean County, Carlock wanted in the Democratic Woodford County. Benson was content to remain in Republican McLean County. As a result, the county line was drawn between their two farms.
This line brought politics into death. Carlock built a cemetary and announced that only Democrats were welcome. Benson followed suit and created one across the county line for Republicans.
This will take you to both cemeteries, starting with the Republican. When in the Democratic cemetery, look for Abraham Carlock's marker and notice what it reads.
