Baubliai – the first museum in Lithuania. The small museum was created in 1812 by the writer, historian Dionizas Poska (1765-1830) in the hollowed-out trunk of an old oak, determined to be about 1000 years old.
People used to say, that in deep hollows of the oak-tree winds bellowed. That’s why the oak was called Baublys (“baubti” – “to bellow”). Writer himself linked Baublys’ name with ancient Lithuanina honey-god Bubilas.
In 1824, the second hollowed-out trunk was put to the next one.
D.Poska liked to work and to rest in Baubliai. Archeological findings, historic and ethnographic materials, imaginary pictures of ancient gods, portraits of notable people and more that 200 books were placed here. Exhibits of Baubliai and inscriptions on it’s walls helped to arose an interest in Lithuanian history and culture, exited patriotic feelings. The “museum” attracted the notice of scholars and writers, and numbers of people, abundant excursions visited it. Some festivals, performance of choirs, picnics have been arranged here.
Once Dionizas Poska died, Baubliai lost their preview fame. Antiquities, collected by D.Poska with great love, testamentary spread all over the country. During World War I, many exhibits of Baubliai were destroyed.
At the end of XIXth – early XXth century the thatched roofs were taken away and were newly boarded; cement foundation was laid.
In 1930, on society initiative, wooden shelters were built around to protect Baubliai from the ill effects of weathering. Metal hoops were made to strengthen the hollowed trunks. In 1947, the museum in Baubliai was re-created. In 1949 – 1962, it was a museum dedicated to D.Poska. In 1956, Baubliai have been conserved for the first time, and some more times afterwards. From 1963 these hollowed trunks have become a part of Siauliai Ausros museum.
In 1969, Baubliai was declared a historical object of state significance. In 1971 the hollowed trunks were enclosed in glass cases; in 1998 the foundations of glass cases was strengthened, the water outlet system arranged.
Baubliai is the monument of ancient Lithuanian culture, having no analogy, reminding us D.Poska and the remote past of Lithuania.
